SideGuard is a safety-assist design tailored for electric bike riders in high-density urban centers such as central Shanghai, where limited road space and surging e-bike numbers have heightened collision risks during peak hours. Drawing on user research and on-site traffic observations, the project proposes a universal side buffer and automatic support system that stabilizes the bike during stops on narrow roads, eliminating the need for riders to extend their feet and tilt the vehicle—thereby reducing hazards to nearby pedestrians and vehicles. Compatible with most e-bike models and requiring no structural modifications, SideGuard offers a low-cost, easily scalable solution. By integrating structural innovation with practical usability, the project enhances individual riding safety and supports the harmonious coexistence of micromobility and dense urban traffic systems, offering a sustainable paradigm for future urban transport design.
